3 Things To Know Today

1 Major Storm Stomps Through 33 States

From deep in the heart of Texas to the Great Lakes, a massive winter storm is dumping snow, ice and outright misery across the country. The National Weather Service is already receiving reports of a foot of snow on the ground in parts of Illinois and Indiana. As a result, thousands of flights have been delayed or cancelled nationwide because of the storm. No surprise considering winter storm warnings remain in place from the Rocky Mountains all the way to Maine. How bad is it? According to FlightAware.com, the number already tops 37-hundred for today and that's expected to only get worse. The worst of the storm will be hitting over the next few hours, with snow and ice threatening to cause power outages in places like Texas and Tennessee.

2 Biden Deploying Troops To Eastern Europe

President Biden is taking steps to help protect Ukraine if Russia invades. He's sending three thousand troops to Eastern Europe. Most are coming from Fort Bragg in North Carolina and will head to Poland and Germany. The rest are based in Germany and will move to Romania. Of course, thousands more remain on alert as Russia continues to send soldiers near Ukraine's borders. The Pentagon says it's prepared to defend NATO allies if it comes to that – though it’s not the preference, of course. Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Russia's troop buildup on the border with Ukraine is "destabilizing.” Not so surprisingly, Moscow is condemning Biden's move – and blaming the United States for whipping up tensions in the region. Russia has demanded security guarantees that Ukraine will not be allowed into NATO and calls sending U.S. troops to Europe a destructive step.

3 Biden Announces A Cancer Cabinet As He Relaunches "Cancer Moonshot”

The President and First Lady Jill Biden are reigniting the "Cancer Moonshot." The program aims to cut the U.S. Cancer death rate by 50% over the next 25-years. "We can do this,” Mr. Biden said at a press event. “We can end Cancer as we know it." He called the "Cancer Moonshot" a top priority of his administration. Of course, his fight is personal – his son, Beau, lost a long battle against Cancer in 2015. As for the term, the "cancer Moonshot" was born during the Obama administration, but lagged in the Trump years. On a related note, Biden is also forming a new Cancer Cabinet. Speaking via Twitter, he said the cabinet will drive the whole-of-government effort to "unleash every possibility within our power to end cancer as we know it."
