1 CA Teen Killed By Police In Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Police Department has released body camera video of a December 23rd shooting, which left a suspect and an innocent 14-year-old girl dead inside a store in North Hollywood. The incident stems from a report of a man with a gun. Police responded and security footage shows that while the man did assault someone – he was only armed with a bike lock. The video shows officers with guns drawn – and one with a rifle. They found a bloodied woman and fired several shots at the suspect, who is standing just a few feet behind her. The man was killed, and one of the officers’ bullets went through a dressing room wall, striking Valentina Orellana-Peralta in the chest and killing her. “This chaotic incident resulting in the death of an innocent child is tragic and devastating for everyone involved,” Police Chief Michel Moore says in a statement. “I am profoundly sorry for the loss of this young girl’s life and I know there are no words that can relieve the unimaginable pain for the family.” Moore also promises a “thorough, complete and transparent investigation.”

2 NFL Hall of Famer John Madden Passes At 85

The football world is mourning the passing of Hall of Famer John Madden, who passed away unexpectedly yesterday. He was 85. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell released a statement saying he extended condolences on "behalf of the entire NFL family." Noting that Madden wasn’t just a player or a broadcaster, Goodell offered, "He was football." For those who don’t know, while Madden was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 21st round of the 1958 draft, it was his run as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969 until 1978, that vaulted him into the record books – winning Super Bowl XI. Of course, he went on to become one of the most well-known broadcasters in all of sports, working as a color analyst for all four major networks until retiring in 2008. At one point, Madden’s broadcasting work had him making more than any player. As for the younger set? The Madden video game series has become one of the most popular franchises' of all-time, selling over 100-million copies since being released in 1988. As Goodell himself noted, "There will never be another John Madden."

3 Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid Dies

Harry Reid, one of the U.S. Senate's longest serving majority leaders has died following a battle with pancreatic cancer. The former Nevada Senator died yesterday at the age of 82. A Democrat, Reid served as the majority leader in the Senate from 2006 to 2014, exiting in 2017. In a statement, current Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Reid one of his "dearest friends" and described him as "one of the most amazing individuals I've ever met." Nevada governor Steve Sisolak tweeted "there will never be another leader quite like Senator Reid." President Biden has also offered his thoughts on Reid’s passing. In his released remarks, Biden said that Reid met the marker of what he believed is the most important measure in a person, their "action and their word." Biden said if Reid gave you his word, you could "bank on it." He added that for Reid, it was about "the power to do right for the people." He also took to Twitter to add a more personal take on Reid, noting, “Harry never forgot his humble roots. A boxer, he never gave up a fight.”
