3 Things To Know Today

1 Paid Family Leave Being Scrapped From Social Spending Bill

Democrats are said to be scrambling to reach a deal on a large social spending bill, and paid family leave is reportedly being dropped from the legislation. Originally, Democrats wanted to include 12 weeks of paid family leave in the bill, and that had been cut back to four weeks to trim the cost of the measure. Then yesterday came word that it's being dropped altogether to get the support of West Virginia moderate Democrat Joe Manchin. But now that may be changing. At least, that’s the case according to Senate Health Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray. “It’s not out,” she said, recounting her conversation with Manchin. “He said he will keep an open mind. He is not a no.” Overnight, reports surfaced on Capitol Hill that family leave is definitely out. Where does the package stand otherwise? In a letter to her fellow Democrats, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote progress is being made on Medicaid expansion in states that don't have it. Pelosi explained she has asked the Rules Committee to consider the legislation today. President Biden is also expected to meet with the Democratic Caucus this morning.

2 Flight Diverted After Flight Attendant Assaulted

An American Airlines passenger is in custody after allegedly assaulting a flight attendant. The plane took off from New York yesterday evening and was heading for Orange County, California when the physical assault took place. While details are scarce, it’s been confirmed that pilots diverted the plane to Denver where law enforcement came on board and removed the passenger. Neither the identity of the assailant nor the condition of the flight attendant have been released – and American says they are working with authorities. “Acts of violence against our team members will not be tolerated by American Airlines," the company says in a statement. "The individual involved in this incident will never be allowed to travel with American Airlines in the future, but we will not be satisfied until he has been prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This behavior must stop, and aggressive enforcement and prosecution of the law is the best deterrent."

3 Mother Of Abandoned Houston Kids Charged

The mother of three Southeast Texas children that found abandoned in an apartment with the skeletal remains of their dead sibling is now under arrest. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says Gloria Williams is accused of injury to a child by omission and tampering with evidence. She's being held more than a one-million dollars bond. Deputies located the boys on Sunday after one of them called 911 reporting the death of a fourth brother. That child – an eight-year-old – had been dead for a year. Officials say the dead child was beaten to death by the Williams’ boyfriend, Brian Coulter. Coulter has been charged with the child's murder. The surviving boys – aged 15, nine and seven – are ow with CPS. Detectives defended the decision to not immediately arrest Williams and boyfriend Brian Coulter, saying they had to wait for an autopsy on the dead boy to be finished. Coulter and Williams were arrested Tuesday evening at a public library where they were searching news articles about themselves. Officials say more charges could be filed.
