3 Things To Know Today

1 FDA Approves Pfizer Booster Shots For The Elderly And High Risk Exposures

The Food and Drug Administration authorized a third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine yesterday for emergency use in people ages 65 and up, as well as those 18 and older at high risk of exposure or severe illness. The emergency authorization recommendation came from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices; the CDC committee had to give their recommendation before booster shots can be given. The group started a two-day meeting yesterday on the safety and effectiveness of Pfizer’s booster shot; the advisers will vote today on who qualifies for a third shot. The boosters won't be just for those 65 and older, but for those at high risk of exposure at work, including “Health care workers, teachers and daycare staff, grocery workers, and those in homeless shelters or prisons.” Those in the approved groups will be allowed to get a third dose six months after their second shot.

2 Tropical Depression 18 Could Be Tropical Storm Sam This Weekend

Tropical Depression 18 officially formed in the Atlantic Ocean yesterday with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm could be near hurricane strength by this weekend; when it reaches tropical storm strength it’ll be named Sam, which will happen when or if the maximum sustained winds reach 39 mph. The depression is over 2,000 miles from the Northern Leeward Islands, but current tracking models show the storm is forecast to travel toward Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. After Sam, there are only three names left on the annual list of storm names…Teresa, Victor, and Wanda. If those names are used, there’s a supplemental list of names this year instead of the Greek alphabet, which was used during last year’s record-breaking season.

3 House Republicans File Articles Of Impeachment Against President Biden

A group of House Republicans filed articles of impeachment against President Biden this week over his handling of the immigration crisis and his withdrawal from Afghanistan. In the three articles filed on Tuesday, Ohio Representative Bob Gibbs said Biden violated his oath of office. The articles are co-sponsored by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs and Texas Reps. Brian Babin and Randy Weber. In a post on his Facebook page, Rep. Gibbs said he doesn’t “take this step lightly,” and goes on to say he was prompted to file the articles after the administration’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. He also admits that the effort to impeach Biden would be difficult because of the “political dynamic in Congress,” specifically the majority held by Democrats. It’s the second time articles of impeachment have been filed against Biden; Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed the day President Biden was sworn into office.
