1 American Teen Makes History In Canoe; We Get Volleyball Gold
As the Tokyo Games come to a close this weekend, the United States is enjoying more gold – and we’re not even done. For one, American Nevin Harrison has made history. The 19-year-old became the first woman to win Olympic gold in the single 200-meter canoe sprint. Harrison posted a time of 45.932, after setting an Olympic best earlier in the day. She bested her closest rival, Canadian Laurence Vincent-Lapointe by nearly a second. Meanwhile, Alix Klineman and April Ross are striking gold on the beach. The American duo topped Australia two-sets-to-none in women's beach volleyball to take home the gold medals at the 2020 Games. They won 21-15 and 21-16. Why is that extra cool? It’s the first gold medal for both women, and for the 39-year-old Ross, it’s the success she’s been fighting for after taking home Silver in London in 2012 and bronze in Rio in 2016. Grant Holloway settled for silver in the men's 110-meter hurdles while Katie Nageotte won gold in the women's pole vault.
2 Biden Awards Congressional Gold Medals To Capitol Police, DC Metro Police
President Biden is honoring the Capitol police officers and DC Metropolitan police who defended the nation's Capitol on January 6th. He signed a bill awarding them Congressional Gold Medals. Biden called what happened that day "fundamentally un-American." However, he added Democracy did survive and truth defeated lies. The President said we should pray for the families of the officers who took their own lives after that day because their heroism cannot be forgotten. The Congressional Medals will be displayed in four places: Two will be kept at the US Capitol police Department and Washington Metro DC police department. The third will be on display at the Smithsonian museum honoring all law enforcement who protected the Capitol that day The fourth will be housed inside the Capitol building. “The tragedy that day deserves the truth above all else,” Biden noted at yesterday’s ceremony. “We cannot allow history to be rewritten. We can't allow the heroism of these officers to be forgotten. We have to understand what happened. The honest and unvarnished truth: we have to face it. That's what great nations do, and we are a great nation.”
3 Cuomo Impeachment Probe Nearly Done
New York State Assembly members appear to be moving in the direction to impeach New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. As the impeachment probe winds down, the word from ‘Camp Cuomo,’ is that he’ll play along. "The Assembly has said it is doing a full and thorough review of the complaints,” Cuomo spokesperson Rich Azzopardi said in a statement. “The Governor appreciates the opportunity. We will be cooperating." To that end, the committee is giving Cuomo until August 13th – that’s next Friday - to respond and submit evidence before it concludes its work and possibly moves towards articles of impeachment. This comes after a report this week by the state attorney general accused the governor of sexually harassing numerous women. Cuomo denies the allegations and has no plans to resign. Multiple district attorneys have opened criminal investigations into the governor. Cuomo denies all allegations and says he has no plans to resign.
