3 Things to Know Today

1 More Gold, Some History For Americans

Ryan Crouser is taking home the gold in the shot put with room to spare. The Fayetteville, Arkansas native set the best distance five times in his six throws, but it was his final throw that made blew a lot of minds. Crouser threw the shot 23.3-meters (that’s 76-feet, 5½ inches), besting his own Olympic record! Also on the podium? Crouser’s teammate Joe Kovacs, a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania native, who is taking home the silver. And while it was a New Zealander - Tomas Walsh – who took bronze, it bears mentioning. Because back in 2016, it was the exact same guys in the exact same spots. This marks the first time in Olympic history in any individual event, the podium is exactly the same. Meanwhile, American Grant Holloway is bringing home the silver medal in the men's 110-meter hurdles. Devon Allen of the U.S. just missed the podium in fourth place. American women's beach volleyball duo April Ross and Alix Klineman are going for gold. The U.S. team knocked off Switzerland in straight sets to advance to the women's beach volleyball final. They’ll face Australia for the gold medal tonight at 10:30pm ET. Ross is guaranteed her third career Olympic medal, but is still seeking her first-ever gold. It will be Klineman's first medal (in what’s also her Olympics debut). This means U.S. will continue its streak of medaling in beach volleyball at every Olympics since the sport was first contested in 1996. Similarly, the U.S. baseball team is now just two wins away from a gold medal at the Tokyo Team USA knocked off the Dominican Republic 3-1 behind five shutout innings from Scott Kazmir. The Americans will meet the Republic of Korea in the semifinals this morning at 6am ET. The winner will face Japan in the gold medal game, while the loser meets the Dominican Republic for the bronze.

2 Cuomo Accuser Files Suit, As Impeachment Move Grows

The first of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo's eleven accusers is filing suit against him. Lindsey Boylan announced the news through her attorney. She says Cuomo's office retaliated against her after she made initial sexual harassment complaints – and according to reports, the co-founders of the Time’s Up movement helped him do it! Boylan worked for the governor and claimed Cuomo kissed her without her permission and made lewd comments. Cuomo has denied those allegations – but that doesn’t matter to State Assembly members. Officials say things appear to be moving in the direction of impeaching Cuomo if he doesn’t resign. Assembly speaker Carl Heastie says Cuomo can no longer remain in office following the state attorney general report accusing the governor of sexual harassment. The Assembly Judiciary Committee is in the middle of the impeachment probe and is expected to meet Monday.

3 White House Defends CDC Move To Extend Eviction Moratorium

The White House is defending the CDC order to extend the renters eviction moratorium across much of the U.S. The latest ban on evictions expires in about two months. President Biden has acknowledged that the extended moratorium may not hold up in court. And on a related note, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki maintains there are still no plans for the federal government to establish vaccine passports. Psaki allowed, however, that private companies and state governments could take such steps if they choose to do so. While the Delta variant has prompted another COVID surge across much of the country – primarily affecting unvaccinated Americans – Psaki also said again that lockdowns are not being considered by the Biden administration.
