1 Northern California Workplace Shooting Leaves 10 Dead, Including Shooter
At least nine people are dead and several others are injured after a gunman fired at a city transportation light rail yard. Russell Davis with the Santa Clara County sheriff's office confirmed the shooter is also dead from a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound because the officers did not return fire. Davis said the yard is right next door to the sheriff's office and officers immediately rushed in to secure the area and offer aid to the victims. In the aftermath, bomb squads tore through suspect's home and at the light rail yard looking for possible explosives. He apparently lit his home on fire before heading to work to cause mayhem. Police say the suspect is an employee of the city transportation agency, who by various accounts has a history of violence in his personal life. He was also reported as being confrontational at work. We are choosing not to name the suspect out of respect to the victims and their families.
2 Arrests In Fatal Italian Cable Car Crash
Authorities in Italy say three men have been arrested on manslaughter charges after a cable car full of passengers fell to the slope below. Apparently, all admitted to turning off the Stresa-Mottarone cable car's emergency brakes before the cable snapped. They told investigators the brakes were malfunctioning and would stop when carrying passengers, so they turned them off. That means that since the cable car reopened after lockdown a month ago, it was operating with without emergency brakes. The workers apparently believed the cables would never break. 14 people died in the crash, with a five-year-old Israeli boy being the only survivor. He remains in critical condition at a Turin hospital.
3 Ohio Announces First Winner of Vax-A-Million Lottery
An Ohio woman is the state's newest millionaire. Abbigail Bugenske of Silverton won the first one-million-dollar prize through the state's Vax-a-Million lottery. The lottery also awards a scholarship to Ohioans ages 12-17 who are vaccinated. Joseph Costello of Englewood won the first scholarship – it’s a full ride to a state school. The Vax-a-Million program gives people the chance to win a million-bucks if they get the coronavirus vaccine. Over the next few weeks, a total of five people will be given million-dollar prizes. As for Bugenske, she may have “won” a million bucks...but that’s not what’s ending up in her bank account. After federal and state taxes are taken out, she’ll take home between $550- and 570-thousand.
