1 Nation On Edge As Closing Arguments Are Delivered In Chauvin Case

With protests around the country continuing over the weekend, tension is at a fever pitch as closing arguments in the trial against the former Minneapolis police officer accused of killing George Floyd get underway today. As you know, Derek Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter for kneeling on Floyd's neck during an arrest last May for nine-minutes and 29-secondx. As we’ve been telling you, jurors have heard testimony from dozens of witnesses over the last two weeks. As the defense wrapped up its case last week, Chauvin invoked his 5th Amendment rights and refused to testify. What about the other officers on the scene that fateful day? Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, will be tried together in August. While the nation’s anger about relations between Black Americans and law enforcement, the tension has been especially thick in Minneapolis following the shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright – about 10-miles away from where Chauvin is being tried. Protesters have been in the streets ever since. Potentially adding fuel to the fire? California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, who appeared at one of the Minnesota protests over the weekend – telling marchers that they need “to get more confrontational” with police. This, as clashes between police and protestors have been getting more violent as the week has gone on.

2 Manhunt For Former Sheriff's Deputy Suspected Of Multiple Murders

A manhunt is on for a former Texas sheriff's detective suspected of killing three people at an Austin apartment complex yesterday. Stephen Broderick is a former detective with the Travis County Sheriff's Office facing charges of sexual assault of a child. Investigators say he opened fire killing two women and a man in a domestic violence incident. A child was there, but is now safe in police custody. Officials say that 41-year-old Broderick is considered armed and dangerous. Austin Interim Police Chief Joe Chacon says there's concern Broderick may take a hostage and may be sheltered somewhere waiting for law enforcement to clear the area. While he says the danger of the situation is still high, it's believed Broderick knew the victims and the attack was not random.

3 Biden Faces Blowback On Immigration Decision, Reverses Course

The White House is doing a quick shuffle on raising the U.S. refugee cap. On Friday, it was revealed that President Biden would keep the cap at 15-thousand this year – as former President Trump had. But that got a fierce response from Democrats. Then, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki put out a clarifying statement, saying the President is expected to set a "final, increased refugee cap for the remainder of this fiscal year by May 15th." The fiscal year ends on September 30th. Prior to his announcement, Biden had said he would like to raise it to roughly 60-thousand. The situation has been complicated by the ongoing surge at the U.S.-Mexican border, a surge that is being fueled by unaccompanied migrant children.
