3 things To Know Today

1 House Canceling Thursday Session Over Security Threat

The House is canceling today’s session over reports of possible security threats. March 4th is the date some conspiracy theorists, including QAnon followers, believe former President Trump will sweep back into power. Capitol Police have said they're aware of a possible plot by an unidentified militia groups to breach the building. While cancelling the session’s disappointing, as they were supposed to vote on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021, that vote was moved to last night – where it passed. While lawmakers argue about the credibility of the threat, at least some are upset that President Trump isn’t doing anything to tamp the concerns down. Among them, Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas), former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. "I think President Trump has the responsibility to tell them to stand down," McCaul tells CNN. "This threat is credible, and it is real."

2 House Passes Sweeping Police Reform Bill

A comprehensive police reform bill is moving to the Senate after being cleared by the House. The Democratic bill is named after George Floyd, the unarmed Black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis last year. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which passed last night mainly along party lines 220-212 , will ban racial profiling, along with the use of chokeholds and no-knock warrants in drug cases. On top of that, the measure establishes a national registry to track police misconduct. "Never again should an unarmed individual be murdered or brutalized by someone who is supposed to serve and protect them," said Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA). "Never again should the world be subject to witnessing what we saw happen to George Floyd in the streets in Minnesota."

3 Biden Rips States Lifting Mask Mandates

How does one encourage President Biden to drop his usual ‘nice guy’ demeanor? Make your own rules with regard to Covid-19. As we told you yesterday, Mississippi has already dropped it’s mask mandate – and opened up businesses 100%. Texas will do so next Wednesday. When asked about the moves at a White House photo op, Biden told reporters that it’s a “big mistake” and called it "neanderthal thinking." Biden noted that the coronavirus crisis has not passed, despite the increase in vaccinations across the U.S. He said facemasks and social distancing help save lives.
