1 Impeachment Prosecutors Close Day Two
The third day of former President Trump's Senate impeachment trial is set for today. House impeachment managers started laying out their case yesterday, a day highlighted by dramatic and previously unseen video from the January 6th assault on the Capitol. The video clips show police being overwhelmed by the huge mob of angry Trump supporters. And one clip? It shows then-VP Mike Pence being hustled out of the Senate chamber as rioters spread throughout the Capitol. Pence was at the Capitol to oversee congressional ratification of the presidential election. Another shows Utah Senator Mitt Romney running to safety as Officer Eugene Goodman warns that rioters are just down the hall. Even more disturbing? The circus-like amusement insurrectionists showed as they chanted, "Hang Mike Pence!" and calling the name of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as they searched for her. There was also audio of Capitol officers desperate for assistance as one called on the radio, “We have been flanked and we’ve lost the line!”
2 CDC Recommends Double Masking Against COVID-19
The CDC is issuing new guidance about masking up against coronavirus. The federal health agency says new research shows double masking offers greater protection against COVID-19 than using a single mask. The CDC also says tying knots on the ear loops of medical masks helps provide more protection by pulling the mask closer to the face. Experts stress that until enough people are vaccinated against COVID-19, masks are the best bet. Thing is? They’re stopping short of updating directives to have folks doubling up. Officials say the most important factor is that the mask is tight-fitting.
3 Making History: Female Marine Recruits To Train At San Diego Base
Dozens of female Marine recruits have arrived at a San Diego boot camp for a historic co-ed training. Officials say 60 women arrived at the San Diego Recruit Depot on Tuesday, where they'll train in a co-ed setting for the first time in the 100-year history of the base. The women will be part of Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. The Marine Corps usually trains women at their East Coast training base at Parris Island in South Carolina. What changed? In 2019, Congress ordered the San Diego boot camp to integrate women into its training battalions by 2028. As for how military training has shifted in the lens of Covid, recruits arrived in San Diego two weeks ago, then received a medical screening at the Depot. They were quarantined at a local hotel until they were considered ready to report. “It’s no different — we’re going to be training essentially the same ways that we have been for years,” says Capt. Ashley Sands. “But I think it really is just a big moment in terms of being able to do this for the very first time.”
