3 Things To Know Today

1 After Months Of Haggling, The Senate Cuts A Covid Relief Deal

Congressional leaders have finalized a deal on a new coronavirus relief package. The 900-billion-dollar plan includes another round of stimulus payments as well as help for small businesses and more unemployment relief. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called it the bipartisan deal that Americans have been waiting for. He noted that they still need to put the final touches on the text before it goes for a vote, which is expected to happen today. Democratic leader Chuck Schumer cheered the deal, but also blamed Republicans for dragging their feet to give Americans relief (a salvo the GOP has also fired in the Dems’ direction). Meanwhile, the White House is signaling President Trump will sign a coronavirus relief package once it's passed. A White House spokesman said Trump has been pushing for more relief for Americans for months. Congressional leaders announced a deal on a 900-billion-dollar COVID relief package.

2 Distribution of Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Begins

Distribution of Moderna's COVID vaccine is getting underway – and the first shots are expected to happen today. That's the word from General Gus Perna the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed. Dr. Moncef Slaoui says the first Moderna vaccine will likely be given in a matter of hours. On CNN's “State of the Union,” the Chief Scientific Adviser for Operation Warp Speed said he expects that to happen this morning. He noted the Moderna vaccine will be easier to distribute because it doesn't need to be stored at such a low temperature when compared to Pfizer's vaccine. However, Dr. Slaoui issued a warning to Americans even though he said there's hope now that we have two vaccines. He cautioned the pandemic will get worse as we deal with the surges during the holiday season.

3 Trump Denies Considering Martial Law

While President Trump continues to protest the election results on Twitter, he’s throwing a ‘Hail Mary pass’ and his re-election campaign is going to the U.S. Supreme Court, but more on that in a second. Trump has taken to Twitter to deny a “New York Times” report suggesting that he was considering a declaration of martial law, as well as an executive order to seize voting machines. “Martial law = Fake News,” Trump offered. “Just more knowingly bad reporting!” According to the “Times,” the heated meeting took place Friday and included recently pardoned Lt. General Michael Flynn as well as Sidney Powell, the conspiracy theorist attorney the campaign recently distanced itself from. As for Trump’s SCOTUS efforts, he’s hoping to overturn rulings by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court over the 2020 election. The rulings on the state's mail-in voting system came ahead of the November contest and the Trump campaign says they violated the Constitution.
