3 Things To Know Today

1 Zeta Gains Strength As It Approaches Mexico

The 2020 hurricane season continues to roar as tropical storm Zeta is getting stronger over the Western Caribbean. Forecasters expect the storm to intensify into a hurricane sometime today and take a track similar to what Hurricane Delta did, striking near Cancun, and then heading towards the Northern Gulf Coast. The storm was nearly stationary overnight, though forecasters said it was likely to shear the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula or westernmost Cuba by late today or early tomorrow and then close in on the U.S. Gulf Coast by Wednesday, but could weaken by then.

2 Amy Coney Barrett Advances, Will Be Voted On Tonight

The Senate is moving forward with the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. Sure, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused Republicans of rushing to a vote with Vice President Mike Pence coming in to preside after potentially being exposed to COVID, but a 51-to-48 procedural vote is in the books. The final confirmation vote for Barrett is expected to happen tonight. Of course, today offers the last chance for Democrats to block the confirmation, but they lack the votes to do so. Republicans call Barrett eminently qualified to serve on the high court. Democrats argue that the winner of the election should choose the next Supreme Court justice. Dems have accused Republicans of shameless hypocrisy (when in truth, both sides could be decreed guilty of that on the subject). Barrett's confirmation would create a 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

3 Fauci Says We'll Know If COVID Vaccine Is Safe By Early December

Dr. Anthony Fauci says we'll know by early December if a coronavirus vaccine is safe and effective for widespread use. The head of the National Institutes of Health (N-I-H) spoke with the BBC, and maintains widespread vaccination still wouldn’t be likely until later in 2021. On that note, Fauci said vaccinating a "substantial proportion" of the population would likely not happen until the second or third quarter next year, but that we'll know whether a vaccine is safe and effective "by the end of November, the beginning of December." Fauci went on to say that he wished public officials would lead by example with regard to things like wearing masks. And while he allowed that he thinks President Trump is taking things in the wrong direction, he also bristled when the host attempted to highlight the seemingly strained relationship between the men – calling such suggestions “unhelpful.”
