3 Things To Know Today

1 Prosecutors: Attacker Asked Students To Point Out Victim

Prosecutors say the man who beheaded a teacher in a Paris suburb Friday first asked students to point out his victim. Police killed the 18-year-old assailant, who was angry that history teacher Samuel Paty reportedly displayed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad as part of the teacher's free speech discussion that included the 2015 massacre in the offices of Charlie Hebdo, the satirical French weekly. Sensitive to potential issues, Paty reportedly told his Muslim students he didn't want to offend them so he ushered them out of the classroom before showing the cartoons. The killer posted a picture of the body on Twitter claiming responsibility, with a message to French President Emmanuel Macron that he had "executed one of your hell-hounds who dared to belittle Prophet Mohammed." Prosecutors said Saturday nine other people are in custody in connection with the attack. Since the murder, tens of thousands have taken to the streets as demonstrations have erupted across the country. Protestors carried signs reading "I am Samuel" and "I am a teacher.”

2 Teenager’s Discovery Could Lead To COVID-19 Therapy

A 14-year-old girl's discovery may lead to a potential coronavirus therapy. Anika Chebrolu from Texas won this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge for discovering a molecule that can bind to a protein within the coronavirus and make it unable to function. Ready to feel stupid? In an interview, she says she “set out to use the in-silico methods to bind to proteins inside the influenza virus,” but the "immense severity" of the pandemic had her shift directions. Chebrolu says excitement around her discovery reflects the "collective hope to end the coronavirus pandemic. Along with the title, the eighth-grader is also taking home a 25-thousand-dollar prize.

3 Speaker Pelosi Not Happy With WH On Virus-Related Issues

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says she isn't happy with the White House when it comes to coronavirus-related proposals. Pelosi sent a letter to her Democratic colleagues and ripped the Trump Administration for its position on things like testing and tracing. Pelosi says the White House refuses to back a national plan on those topics and added that the administration got rid of ways that would tackle how the pandemic has affected minority communities. Despite that, Pelosi said she's hopeful a deal can be reached on a stimulus relief package before the election. On that note, Pelosi says there isn't much time left to reach a stimulus deal before the election – and yesterday, during an appearance on ABC's “This Week,” Pelosi said there were 48 hours left to come together and agree on a package if leaders want to do something before the election. Pelosi says she's confident something can be done, but she added there must be an agreement on the language.
