3 Things To Know Today

1 Laura Slams Into Texas And Louisiana As A Category 4

Hurricane Laura made landfall overnight near Cameron, Louisiana – as a Category Four storm – just 7-miles per hour short of a Category 5 storm. For context, Hurricane Katrina was a Category 3 storm when it made landfall in 2005. As bad as the winds, Laura’s unprecedented storm surge of as much as 20-feet, which could penetrate as much as 40-miles inland. What does that mean in terms of potential damage? National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham says Laura will literally change the map. Graham said the 15- to 20-feet of expected surge is devastating and "not survivable." More than 500-thousand residents in Louisiana and Texas were ordered to evacuate in advance of Laura’s arrival, and what’s most concerning to officials? They haven’t seen the expected number of exits. It’s the most powerful storm to hit the region in 160-years...essentially, on record. Our prayers are with everyone affected.
