3 Things To Know Today

1 Officers Shot In Texas As Hostage Stand-off Continues

At last check, a hostage situation is still ongoing in central Texas after a suspect shot three police officers in Cedar Park yesterday – it’s just outside of Austin. Officials say the incident began when officers responded to a call from a woman who said her son kicked in her door and was acting aggressive. When officers arrived, the suspect opened fire, hitting three of them. The suspect barricaded himself inside with three other family members – which is where he remains. "There are some mental health issues," says Interim police Chief Mike Harmon, who adds that officers want to "get this person the help they need." As for the injured officers, Chief Harmon says they’re in stable condition and he's hopeful they'll be okay. Harmon pleaded with the suspect to bring the situation to a peaceful end. Gov. Greg Abbott has taken to Twitter to express his support for the officers. “We must never take for granted the service and sacrifice of our law enforcement officers,” he writes. “The state of Texas stands ready to provide the support and resources needed to bring justice to those involved.”

2 Pelosi Calls Lawmakers Back To 'Save Postal Service'

Whatever jokes you’ve made about the postal service, don’t make them near Capitol Hill – as no one’s likely to laugh. On one side of the aisle – President Trump, who says he’s trying to save the thing. On the other side? The Democrats, who say the President is trying to steal an election. At issue is funding – both in general, but also as it relates to mail-in ballots. Last week, Trump admitted to holding up funding over the ballots. Whichever side you’re on, something everyone agrees on? That this is a crisis. And that’s why House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling lawmakers back to Washington, D.C. – she wants them to vote on a bill "to save the Postal Service." Pelosi called on the House to return to session later this week to vote on the Deliver for America Act. The legislation requires the Postal Service to operate at the same level of service it provided on January 1st of 2020. In a letter to fellow Democrats, Pelosi blamed Trump for a "campaign to sabotage the election" through sweeping changes aimed at delaying mail-in ballots.

3 CDC Releases New Guidance For Those Who've Recovered From COVID-19

The CDC is offering new guidance for people who have recovered from COVID-19. They say people are likely protected for up to three months after having the virus, but it's still possible to get reinfected. Officials think antibodies fade over time and recommend getting re-tested if symptoms show up again, especially after the three-month period. Speaking of tests, a COVID-19 saliva test used by the NBA is getting approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA said emergency use is in effect now for the salivaDirect test, which doesn’t use a swab. A person's spit is collected and tested. It is one of five saliva tests the FDA has approved for use. President Trump disagrees with a prediction from the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The President shared his viewpoint during a media event at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club. He said he disagrees with Dr. Robert Redfield's prediction that if Americans don't heed the CDC's COVID-19 recommended restrictions we will have "the worst fall from a public health perspective we've ever had."
