The guitar Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana’s iconic 1993 “MTV Unplugged” performance hit the auction block. The 1959 Martin D-18E is officially the most expensive guitar ever sold after being swiped up for a record $6-million over the weekend as part of Julien’s Auctions “Music Icons” lot. Even before bidding had officially opened on Saturday, pre-auction bids on the late Nirvana legend’s guitar reached $1-million. The guitar got seven bids total, including Peter Freedman of Rode Microphone’s winning bid of $6-million-10-thousand. In a statement, Freedman reveals plans to display the guitar in a worldwide exhibition tour, with all proceeds going to the performing arts. The previous record was $3.95-million for a Black Stratocaster owned by Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour.
