3 Things To Know Today

1 Trump Freezes Out The WHO...For Now

President Trump says he's ordered a halt to funding to the World Health Organization. Speaking at the White House, Trump charged that the W-H-O "severely mismanaged" the early spread of the coronavirus – noting that the W-H-O was not on board with his decision to ban travel to the U.S. from China. “We have deep concerns about whether America's generosity has been put to the best use possible,” the president offered. “The reality is that the W-H-O failed to adequately obtain, vet and share information in a timely and transparent fashion." On a related note, Trump called out other nations and regions for accelerating the pandemic by following W-H-O guidelines and keeping their borders open to China. Trump said that decision is "one of the great tragedies and missed opportunities from the early days."

2 Trump: U.S. Is Winning The War Against The Coronavirus

President Trump says the U.S. is “winning the war” against the deadly coronavirus. During a White House meeting with eight coronavirus patients who have recovered, Trump maintained that his administration has made the right moves. He also insisted that the next step is getting the economy up-and-running again. He said he'll be making a big decision on that soon, "in conjunction with governors." A bit of a flip, considering he incorrectly claimed “total authority” over the country the day before. Without giving details, Trump cited a "lot of progress" on a vaccine and a possible "cure” and said they give people hope about surviving the outbreak.

3 Coronavirus Update: FDA Approves Saliva Test, Pentagon Believes It’s Natural

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is giving authorization to Rutgers University to use the first saliva test to detect coronavirus. The patient spits into a tube for the test. This matters because it's expected to decrease the risk of exposure for healthcare workers who currently take swabs from a person's throat for a sample. But it could also increase the number of coronavirus screenings. The FDA says the new testing method should only be done under healthcare supervision and not at home. The tests will first be available in New Jersey at hospitals associated with Rutgers and for Middlesex County residents at a drive-thru testing facility in Edison starting today. Meanwhile...Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley says intelligence has been looking into rumors that COVID-19 was started in a Chinese lab, but so far it’s believed the coronavirus is natural. He said intelligence officials were interested after hearing those rumors and began investigating. Milley says that so far the evidence is inconclusive, but it appears not to have started in a lab.
