3 Things To Know Today

1 US And And Taliban Sign Deal To End War

The U.S. agreement with the Taliban is a done deal – but it may already be unraveling. More on that in a moment. First, the historic signing of an agreement to start withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan came over the weekend – with a U.S. special envoy and representatives of the Taliban signing the deal in a formal ceremony in Qatar's capital of Doha. If it holds, it will bring the end of the longest war in American history – but therein lies the rub. As part of the initial agreement, thousands of Taliban prisoners were supposed to be freed. Now, Afghanistan's president President Ashraf Ghani says he will not free thousands of Taliban prisoners. His gripe? That the United States made a promise it had no right to make. Meantime, the Taliban is doing some diplomacy after signing a peace deal with the U.S. The hardline Islamist group said today that its top political chief is meeting with senior diplomats from Russia, Indonesia, Norway and other countries.

2 Trump Calls Coronavirus Dems' "New Hoax," Imposes Travel Restrictions

President Trump says the Democrats are "politicizing the coronavirus" and is referring to the reaction over the coronavirus/COVID-19 as “the Democrats’ new hoax.” Trump also called out the news media for going "in hysteria mode" over the illness. He made the remarks during a rally in South Carolina – and clarified later at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) that his comments were all about the weaponizing of the coverage. “Everything is really under control,” Trump noted. “But when they put a mic in front of a Democrat and the Democrats say, doesn't even know what's going on, how is Trump doing, he's doing a terrible job. Well, sadly I'd probably say the same about them,” he said. “You know. I guess it's a natural reflex.” Meanwhile, President Trump is rolling out new travel restrictions after officials in Washington state announced the first death in the U.S. from the coronavirus. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence announced the ban on travel to and from Iran today along with warning Americans not to travel to parts of Italy and South Korea. Travel from China is already restricted and the President said he's also looking at the southern border with Mexico. Where are we really with COVID-19? There are currently 74 cases in the United States – with two patients succumbing to the illness. Both had underlying health conditions. At last check, the numbers stood at just over 89-thousand people infected by the virus worldwide – and over three-thousand dead. On the plus side, more than 45-thousand have recovered.

3 Coming Off SC Win, Biden Looks To Super Tuesday As The Field Narrows

Former Vice President Joe Biden is the decisive winner of South Carolina's Democratic presidential primary – a win that’s given his campaign a much-needed jolt ahead of Super Tuesday, tomorrow. That’s when voters in 14 states will cast ballots. Biden calls Super Tuesday a “pivotal moment” for the Democratic Party – and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders agrees. Campaigning in Virginia, Sanders congratulated Biden and said – "You can't win them all." Still, both men are very confident about their respective chances of securing the Democratic nomination. Even so, there’s been a growing chorus of concern about Sanders being the nominee and with Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren saying they’re not going anywhere, the field has already consolidated – with both Tom Steyer and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg bowing out after their poor performances in South Carolina.
