3 Things to Know Today

1 Trump Impeachment Trial Returns Today

The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump adjourned on Saturday and everyone returns today. To review, Trump lawyers started laying out their defense during a brief Saturday session. White House counsel Pat Cipollone [[sip-uhl-OWN-ee]] argued that the President did absolutely nothing wrong. He said Democrats did not make a case for removing Trump from office. He also accused Democrats of trying to interfere in this year's presidential election. Cipollone called it the most "massive interference in an election in American history." Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said there is "overwhelming evidence" that the President did nothing wrong. Deputy White House counsel Patrick Philbin insisted that the President was denied "due process" in the House impeachment inquiry. Deputy White House counsel Michael Purpura argued that the Democrats' case is entirely unfounded. Purpura also insisted that Trump was acting in the U.S. national interest "at all times." As you’ll recall, Trump was impeached by the House last month for abusing his power and obstruction of Congress in the investigation of the Ukraine scandal. Democrats said Trump illegally withheld vital U.S. military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democrats. Purpura stressed that Trump was legitimately concerned about corruption in Ukraine and was angry that U.S. allies were not doing their fair share to help Ukraine.

2 Kobe Bryant & His Daughter Killed In Helicopter Crash

The Mamba has left the building. Kobe Bryant has died. The 41-year-old was among the nine killed in a helicopter crash yesterday morning in Calabasas, California. His 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also on-board. They were on their way to the Mamba Academy in Thousand Oaks for basketball practice. Apparently, Kobe was known to travel by helicopter. During his career, he would commute from Newport Beach, California to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles in his Sikorsky S-76 chopper. Kobe was born in Philadelphia but grew up in Italy where his father played basketball. Kobe joined the NBA right after graduating high school. He spent his 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers. He was the third all-time scorer in the NBA until Saturday when he was surpassed by LeBron James. He also won five NBA championships. When he retired in 2016, in 2016, he set another record by making 60 points in his final game. Kobe wasn’t just a great ballplayer. He won an Oscar for his short film, “Dear Basketball,” in 2018. He was also a children’s book author, an Olympic gold medalist, and husband to Vanessa, and father to Bianka, Natalia, and little Capri, who was born in June 2019. As an ironic nod to the sportsmanship Kobe was known for, his last tweet came Saturday night - after LeBron James' incredible accomplishment. "Continuing to move the game forward @KingJames," he wrote. "Much respect my brother." Of course, the loss any child is tragic, but in the case of Gianna - she was truly her father's daughter. Those who knew them have said Gianna loved basketball as much as her daddy.
