3 Things To Know Today

1 Swiss Avalanche Injures Two, Buries Many More

At least two people were injured and several buried in snow when an avalanche hit a ski resort in the Swiss Alps. The avalanche started at approximately 10:50 a.m. local time and struck a slope at the SkiArena resort in Andermatt, Switzerland. Andermatt is approximately 68 miles south of Zurich. Six people were rescued or freed themselves from the snow. The two people with minor injuries were flown to a local hospital. The search team is comprised of five avalanche search dogs, Alpine Rescue Switzerland, Swiss Air Ambulance and the state police, as well as other agencies. Rescuers are unsure if any more people are trapped beneath the snow. The slopes will remain closed today.

2 China, Russia, Iran To Hold Naval Drills

China, Russia, and Iran are holding joint naval exercises in the Indian Ocean starting today. The Chinese defense ministry says the aim of the drills is to deepen cooperation between the three countries. The exercises will also include the Sea of Oman, which connects to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil passes. The drills are also coming at a time of fraught tensions between the United States and Iran while China has close diplomatic, trade and energy ties with Iran.

3 President Trump Is Weighing In On Crisis In Syria

President Trump is warning three nations not to kill thousands of innocent civilians in Syria. The President has taken to Twitter to say that Russia, Syria, and Iran are killing, or about to kill, thousands of innocents in Idlib Province. He asked them in the tweet not to do it. He wrote that Turkey is working hard to stop the carnage. That province is the last stronghold of rebels battling the Assad government. Airstrikes by Russian and Syrian planes have killed dozens this month and displaced tens of thousands. The President ordered most U.S. troops to leave Syria and handed over control to Turkey.
