3 Things To Know Today

1 Dems Drafting Formal Articles Of Impeachment Against Trump

It’s officially official. House Democrats are drafting formal articles of impeachment against President Trump. Speaking at the Capitol yesterday, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Trump will be charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Nadler argued that Trump betrayed the nation's trust and endangered U.S. national security by pressuring Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called it a solemn day. Nadler said the Judiciary Committee will consider the articles of impeachment later this week. The chairs of several House committees joined Nadler and Pelosi for the announcement...including Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, who charged that Trump jeopardized the security of the next election and argued that the "facts are not seriously contested." Nadler noted that Republicans "hardly attempted to defend the President's conduct."What’s next? Speaker Pelosi first announced an impeachment inquiry in September. The full House could vote on the articles of impeachment sometime next week. If Trump is impeached, the Senate would hold a trial to determine whether Trump is removed from office – and that’s likely to happen after the first of the year. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts would preside over a Senate trial. About the process...Whereas the House requires a simple majority vote – something they clearly have with the Democrats – it takes a supermajority in the Senate to remove a President from office. That means 67 senators would have to agree that Trump should be impeached – and 20 Republicans would have to turn on him along the way. By just about all accounts, that seems highly unlikely.

2 Trump, GOP Reacts To Impeachment Articles

President Trump is blasting the House Judiciary Chair Jerry Nadler’s claims that he pressured Ukraine to interfere in the 2020 election. And while Trump reacted more in depth at a rally in Pennsylvania last night, he began firing salvos on Twitter soon after Democrats announced their coming Articles of Impeachment. The President tweeted that Congressman Nadler knows both Ukraine's president and foreign minister have said repeatedly they felt no pressure. Trump said Democrats know this, but refuse to acknowledge it. He immediately tweeted after that, "WITCH HUNT!" Meanwhile, House Republican leaders are slamming Democrats for drafting of articles of impeachment against Trump. Talking with reporters at the Capitol, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called it “a sad day for America” and accused Democrats of “trying to remove a President because they dislike him.” McCarthy called it embarrassing and insisted that impeachment is increasingly unpopular across the U.S.

3 Shootout In Jersey City Leaves Six Dead, Three Injured

Police are confirming that one police officer, two suspects and three civilians are dead following a shooting in Jersey City, New Jersey yesterday. Several others – two officers and one civilian – are recovering from injuries. Police Chief Michael Kelly says the officer was in plain clothes when he was shot with a high-powered rifle at a local cemetery. The suspects reportedly fled and were holed up in a kosher supermarket for hours, where they continued to fire at police. In the end, five people were found dead inside the store, including the two suspects. The officer who was killed was identified as Detective Joseph Seals – a husband and father of five. Neighbors turned off their Christmas lights in tribute to Detective Seals last night. Meanwhile, investigators in New Jersey believe the gunmen targeted the market – though they don’t yet know why. Mayor Steve Fulop says that while investigators think the store was targeted, authorities aren't aware of any further threats to the community.
