Game Five—the final game played in DC in the Series—they still haven’t won a game in our nation’s capital in 86 years. The Astros evened the series over the weekend with a 4-1 Game 3 win on Friday and an 8-1 Game 4 win Saturday. And just when it looked like it couldn’t get worse, it did, as Nationals ace Max Scherzer—who was set to pitch last night—was scratched with back spasms at the last minute. In his stead was Joe Ross who never had a chance as the Cole that the Nationals beat in Game One to end his streak of 20 consecutive decisions with a win started a new streak—shutting down the Nats bats by scattering three hits over seven innings and allowing just one run. So really, it was over when Ross allowed this two-run shot to rookie Yordan Alvarez in the second. Carlos Correa added another two run-shot in the fourth hit and—since it seemed to be the thing to do—George Springer added another two-run shot in the ninth for the final score of 7-1. It’s back to Houston for Game Six tomorrow night where Justin Verlander looks for his first World Series win ever after five straight losses.
