3 Things To Know Today

1 California Burning. Again.

Officials have confirmed that four fires are burning out of control in the Golden State and that the worst are the Tick and Kincaide fires. The Tick Fire is torching Canyon Country north of Los Angeles has scorched over 39-hundred acres and is zero-percent contained. The biggest of four, the blaze has forced about 50-thousand people to evacuate so far. The Kincaide Fire is burning in Northern California is getting bigger by the minute. Scorching northeastern Sonoma County, was reported around 9:30 Wednesday night and it has since blown up to an estimated ten-thousand acres. Crews haven't been able to get any containment lines around the blaze. Winds are driving the fire south and families are being forced to evacuate. Ironically, the Kincaide fire apparently started in an area where PG&E shut off power on Wednesday in hopes of reducing the risk of wildfires. PG&E has since confirmed reported a faulty transmission line where the Kincade Fire started. Fire officials say strong winds that have been fanning the flames will continue into today. Forecasters say peak gusts could top 70-miles-per-hour.

2 Trump Sending Tanks To Syria

Are we "in" or are we "out?" According to various reports, the Pentagon is planning to send tanks to protect oil fields in Syria. Senior officials speaking on the condition of anonymity say the U.S. is looking to deploy part of an armored unit to the eastern part of the country. It’s believed that the contingent would include as many as 30 Abrams tanks along with troops to operate and maintain the vehicles. The move is a bit of a whiplash as President Trump announced earlier this month he was withdrawing American troops from Syria, and while he said said a "small number" would stay in the region – he’s also said that the US had “secured the oil” even while withdrawing its forces. Adding confusion to the situation? The President tweeting: “Perhaps it is time for the Kurds to start heading to the oil region!” He also noted that the fields in question “were held by ISIS until the United States took them over with the help of the Kurds. We will NEVER let a reconstituted ISIS have those fields!”

3 Congressional Leaders Honor The Late Representative Elijah Cummings

Tributes are pouring in for the late Representative Elijah Cummings. He chaired the powerful House Oversight Committee and died last week at the age of 68. During a ceremony at the Capitol, Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the veteran Maryland Democrat was a true "master of the House." She also called him the "North Star" of Congress. From across the aisle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell noted Cummings' lifelong love of his hometown of Baltimore. Cummings has been lying in state inside the Capitol's Statuary Hall. After lying in state at the Capitol, Cummings will be laid to rest in Baltimore this morning. A wake will be held at 8am at New Psalmist Baptist Church, Cummings' church of nearly 40 years. The funeral will follow at 10am and speakers will include former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
