3 Things To Know Today

1 Dorian's Path Expected To Cross Florida

It’s official, Florida is in the path of Tropical Storm Dorian. At the moment, the storm is bearing down on the eastern Caribbean, but the National Hurricane Center's five day outlook for Dorian shows it hitting southern Florida Saturday. The good news (for Floridians)? Dorian is expected to weaken to a tropical storm. But before that happens, Puerto Rico is preparing for Dorian to hit when it’s at hurricane strength tomorrow. Right now, a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the U.S. island territory. That’s why Wanda Vasquez Garced, the newly-minted governor of Puerto Rico, is declaring a state of emergency. The declaration gives local authorities resources to prepare for the storm. It also allows the National Guard to be called up to help out. Governor Vasquez Garced is urging Puerto Ricans to be calm and said officials are ready for the storm to arrive.

2 Trump: Decisions & Actions Not Motivated By Politics

As the G7 conference wound down, President Trump wants his fans – and foes – to know one thing: his decisions and actions are not motivated by politics. Speaking at a press conference, Trump said he does "nothing for politics" and insisted he does "what's right." He added, "People like what I do but I just do what's right." That being said, he also shared his thoughts on a number of topics, including the environment. Calling himself an “environmentalist,” it was also noted that he skipped a meeting on global climate change. Talking with reporters, Trump defended his administration's policies saying he will not sacrifice America's wealth for "dreams on windmills." Speaking of ‘dreams,’ French President Emmanuel Macron [[MAH-crohn]] says the notion of coming to terms with Iran is no pipe dream. Macron said that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani [[roo-HAN-ee]] is willing to meet with any leader, including President Trump. Trump said he’d be willing "if the circumstances were right." What about China? While being very complimentary about Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump said he's open to coming to an agreement. "Only if it's a fair deal and a good deal for the United States," he added. "Otherwise, I will not make a deal. Not surprisingly, Trump’s G7 comments weren’t without some controversy. For one, a number of people say they see Mr. Trump continuing to profit personally from his presidency. It’s also been noted that he’s spent a third of his presidency visiting his properties at taxpayer expense. He has rebuffed the suggestion, but spent some time promoting the Trump National Doral Golf Club as a fine setting to host world leaders next year. He noted that it is close to the Miami International Airport and added, “With Doral, we have a series of magnificent buildings, we call them bungalows, they each hold from 50 to 70 very luxurious rooms with magnificent views. We have incredible conference rooms, incredible restaurants, it's like such a natural.”

3 Johnson & Johnson Ordered To Pay $572M to State of Oklahoma

A judge is ruling that Johnson and Johnson must pay $572-million to the state of Oklahoma for misleading marketing for opioids. Judge Thad Balkman said in court that the pharmaceutical company "created a nuisance" and the state has "met its burden" of proof. Balkman added that the nation's opioid crisis is an "imminent danger and menace" to Oklahomans. Johnson and Johnson was the only defendant in the seven-week trial, which began on May 28th. Purdue Pharma and Teva Pharmaceutical each reached a settlement with the Oklahoma attorney general's office before the trial began. The lawsuit claimed the practice contributed to six-thousand deaths in two years and has cost the state as much as 17-and-a-half-billion-dollars. The state has said it wants to use the money for addiction treatment and prevention programs. Johnson & Johnson says they'll appeal the decision. While the fine sounds massive - and it is - it's still significantly less than what Oklahoma was asking for. That result sent the company's stock up about 2% in post-market trading
