3 Things To Know Today

1 Mueller Formally Steps Down As Special Counsel

Robert Mueller may have formally stepped down as special counsel, he may have backed up his report's findings. But however you felt about his work yesterday…you likely feel the same about it today. Until yesterday, Mueller hadn’t spoken publicly since being appointed special counsel. And what he offered thrilled his supporters as much as it infuriated his detractors. Speaking at the Justice Department, Mueller summarized key findings from his report – and outlined sweeping efforts by Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. He also noted that there was insufficient evidence to "charge a broader conspiracy." But when it comes to the highly questioned obstruction charges, he was clear. Mueller said he did not make any recommendations about obstruction of justice because of a longstanding Justice Department policy that a president cannot be charged with a federal crime while in office. Mueller called such a move unconstitutional. And if you’re not clear what he meant? He insisted that if there was clear evidence that the President didn’t commit obstruction, he’d have said so. “If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so,” Mueller offered. “…charging the president with a crime was therefore not an option we could consider.” He added that it’s the job of Congress — not the criminal justice system — to hold the president accountable for any wrongdoing.

2 More Wicked Weather On Tap As States Deal With Disaster

Tornado warnings remain up throughout a big portion of the U.S. A tornado already hit part of North Texas yesterday, and tornado watches are in effect for most of Pennsylvania, parts of New Jersey, Arkansas and Oklahoma. This includes tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail. At last check, the U.S. has had 352 reported tornadoes in 22 states in the last 12 days. May has been the most active month for tornadoes since April 2011, when over 800 tornadoes were reported. Meanwhile, some major damage is being reported from a tornado near Canton, Texas. Officials say that southwest of Canton, a group of homes suffered catastrophic damage with top floors of two story homes ripped off and roofs destroyed. Debris is scattered across the area.

3 White House: Time To Move On After Russia Probe

"The case is closed!" That's how President Trump is reacting to comments from Special Counsel Robert Mueller. As Mr. Trump sees – and as he tweeted – nothing has changed and argued that a "person is innocent" if there is "insufficient evidence" to charge a crime. Mueller said a longstanding department policy prohibited him from charging the President with a crime in the Russia investigation. Mueller also added, if he had confidence that the President clearly did not commit a crime, he would have said so. Backing up the President’s assertions, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders took to Fox News to cheer that the Russia investigation is over and argued it’s “time to move on.” Sanders said the "case is closed" and called the Russia probe a hoax and a lie. As for the possibility of impeachment in the Democratic-led House, Sanders said it would "hurt Americans."
