3 Things To Know Today

1 Military Action Frees Hostages Held In Africa

An American woman will soon be on her way home after she and three other hostages were apparently rescued last week. Sadly, two French soldiers were killed in the rescue operation in the west African nation of Burkina Faso. The hostages were taken on May 1st in Benin. In addition to the American woman – who has specifically requested that her identity be kept private – two French men and a South Korean woman were also rescued by French forces with support from the U.S. military. Officials say four terrorists were also killed during the rescue operation. While the American is staying quiet, Frenchmen Patrick Picque [[pee-KAY]] and Laurent Lassimouillas are speaking out – and essentially apologizing for the trouble they got themselves into. Speaking at a press conference, Lassimouillas said the former hostages sent their “sincere condolences” to the family and friends of the two soldiers who “sacrificed” their lives. He also admitted he and his companion should have “taken into account” official advice not to visit the region and “avoided going to that magnificent region of the world that has unhappily tipped into instability.”

2 National Weather Service Warns Of Life-Threatening Flooding In New Orleans

The National Weather Service is issuing a life-threatening flash flood warning for New Orleans. Heavy rain is still falling in southeast Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi – as the storms march east. At last check, tens of thousands of customers were without power in that corner of Louisiana. Up to six inches of rain could fall in some areas. Flash flood warnings are still in effect in parts of Texas, including Houston and Austin. Earlier Saturday a freight train derailed in Mississippi after flooding wiped out the tracks. Fortunately, no one was injured. The bottom line? Those in affected areas had better be careful…and for some time. AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun explains, “River flooding may continue into June as floodwaters in rivers farther north travel southward and add onto the ongoing flooding along the lower Mississippi River.”

3 Pompeo To Discuss Iran With European Leaders Today

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is making a change to his trip to Russia this week. Pompeo called off a stop in Moscow today and will instead meet European leaders in Brussels to discuss Iran and other issues. The meeting comes amid increased tensions between the U.S. and Iran, and as European leaders look to preserve the Iran nuclear deal. After the Brussels talks, Pompeo will continue to Sochi, Russia tomorrow. There he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as planned.
