Child Respiratory Virus Spreads Nationwide

A surge in respiratory illnesses among children is beginning to put a strain on hospitals. Cases of Respiratory Syncytial Virus, known as R-S-V, are now quickly rising in at least 32 states, according to CDC data. The virus frequently infects children under two, but doctors say cases are appearing earlier in the season and more rapidly than usual. It tends to cause mild, cold-like symptoms, but people with weaker lungs like infants and older adults may develop severe infections such as pneumonia. RSV typically peaks in February, but medical experts say all bets are off this season with no vaccine for it.
