Governor Greg Abbott says part of the state's $33 billion budget surplus could be spent on school safety. The families of the Uvalde and Santa Fe school shooting victims are pressuring Texas lawmakers to pass gun control bills. In his State of the State address in February, Abbott named school safety as one of his seven legislative priorities for the current session. He says the Legislature should spend about $750 million in the next budget on campus security, mass shooter training for police, and mental health programs for schools.
