A man is dead and at least two other people injured after being attacked by dogs in a west side San Antonio neighborhood this afternoon.

Fire Chief Charles Hood says firefighters were called to the scene and the attack was still underway when they arrived. "The firefighters were very heroic in this instance, fighting off these pit bulls with pickaxes and pike poles to try to get to the patients," said Hood. "It was a horrific scene. Horrific for the people that experienced this and horrific for our firefighters who experienced this rescue."

Hood says a man died in the attack. A woman is said to be in critical condition and another person suffered less serious injuries. The attack took place in the 2800 block of Depla Street.

The dogs were later rounded up by San Antonio's Animal Control Services and will be placed in quarantine as the investigation continues.
