San Antonio's Airport Marks Black History Month With Decorated Benches

San Antonio International Airport is celebrating Black History Month with a special art installation in the Baggage Claim area.

The Unseen Artists Bench Project, which is part of Centro San Antonio’s Art Everywhere Initiative, consists of benches decorated by local African American artists. The painted wooden benches are on loan from In the Eye of the Beholder Art Gallery & Studio. The unique seating is part of the many art installations that make up the Galleries @ SAT.

The featured artists include:

  • Deloné Osby - @PaintByDeLone
  • Jocelyn van Taylor - @jocelynvantaylor.art
  • Kwanzaa Edwards - @empty_holiday
  • Hailey Gearo - @Hailey_Gearo
  • Swerve O' Harold - @eotb_gallery
  • Tyson Davis - @tysondavisart
  • Alain Gakwaya - @alain.boris
  • Darryl Dunn - @dunnswood
  • Asia Dodd - @eotb_gallery
  • Jaden D. Blango - @jd.blango

“With the help of Maria Williams, who owns In the Eye of the Beholder Art Gallery & Studio, we've been able to curate a group of young Black artists who represent the diversity of Black art and the Black experience. The goal is to showcase Black art, our talent and our joy in a way that brightens our city,” said Darryl Dunn, one of the artists whose work is featured. “This project is interactive and functional – and we invite everyone to have a seat and share the experience.”

Travelers can enjoy using the benches throughout February.
