Lobbying Efforts Fail To Bring Casinos To Texas

Casino gambling isn't coming to Texas anytime soon, as lobbying efforts fell short. Proposed bills that would have legalized gambling failed to make it out of committee, despite a push from one of the world's largest casinos. The Las Vegas Sands spent more than ten million dollars to hire dozens of lobbyists and run ads on TV and radio, but it wasn't enough. Rice University political analyst Mark Jones says the pandemic's damage to the state economy wasn't severe enough to make potential casino revenue a compelling argument.
