Two Houston state senators both say they want to end the practice of repeatedly releasing violent criminal suspects on bond. Republican State Senator Paul Bettencourt says the policy puts the public in danger. Democratic State Senator John Whitmire agrees, and says he wants to see a standardized statewide system that sets bond based on risk.
A suspect who was shot and killed on Tuesday after pointing a gun at a Houston officer had been released twice last month and then skipped his court date. Bettencourt and Whitmire say the problem will be an issue in upcoming elections.
