The State Department has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, and Chinese officials are already promising retaliation.
It's the latest step in a tense standoff between the two countries over multiple issues, including China's treatment of Hong Kong.
On Tuesday night, firefighters were called to the consulate but barred from entering, after reports that papers were being burned on the property.
Sen. Marco Rubio - who was targeted with a travel ban by Chinese officials last week - says the Houston consulate is "not a diplomatic facility" but part of China's "vast network of spies & influence operations in the United States".
