San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg is one of nine mayors in Texas who are asking Governor Greg Abbott to allow them to require masks to slow the spread of coronavirus. The mayors wrote a joint letter pleading with Abbott to give them this authority. Current state guidelines recommend masks but don't require them, and local officials aren't allowed to issue more restrictive orders. The letter was also signed by the mayors of Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Arlington, Plano and Grand Prairie.
