Paxton: Disaster Property Tax Exemption Doesn't Apply To Pandemic Losses

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says a new state law allowing tax exemptions during a disaster doesn't apply to the coronavirus outbreak. The Legislature enacted the law last year in response to Harvey's heavy property damage. Governor Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration last month because of the pandemic, but Paxton issued a statement on Tuesday saying the tax break doesn't cover economic losses resulting from the crisis. He said the pandemic is causing economic losses that aren't the result of physical damage to property.
