Disaster Property Tax Exemption Doesn't Apply To Pandemic Losses

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says a new state law allowing tax exemptions during a disaster doesn't include the coronavirus pandemic. The Legislature passed the law last year in response to severe property damage from Harvey. Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration last month because of the pandemic, but Paxton issued a statement on Tuesday saying the tax break doesn't cover economic losses resulting from the virus. He said the pandemic is causing economic loss that doesn't involve physical damage to property.
