Trump Declassifies Photo of Hero Dog Injured in al-Baghdadi Raid

Conan, dog injured in al-bagdadi raid declassified by Trump

A very good dog is receiving some well-earned recognition after President Donald Trump declassified a photo of the female Belgian Malinois that was injured in the raid that killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi over the weekend.

President Trump published the photo of the dog Monday evening, who was injured in the raid after al-Baghdadi set off explosives contained in a suicide vest the ISIS leader was wearing. U.S. Army General Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told reporters on Monday the dog had been "slightly wounded and [was] fully recovering" from her injuries, adding that the dog was crucial to the success of the operation to nab the Islamic State leader.

"We have declassified a picture of the wonderful dog (name not declassified) that did such a GREAT JOB in capturing and killing the Leader of ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi," Trump tweeted, without revealing any details about the hero dog's identity.

"We are not releasing the name of the dog right now," the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Mark A. Milley, told reporters on Monday. "We're protecting his identity."

Hours later, citing multiple Defense Department sources, Newsweek published the name of the dog - "Conan" who is reportedly named for the late-night comedian and not the barbarian made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The leader of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed on Saturday after the U.S. military raided his compound in northwest Syria. Members of the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, known as Delta Force chased al-Baghdadi into a tunnel where he the former leader was "whimpering and crying and screaming all the way" Trump relayed.

Trump added that DNA test results confirmed that the person killed is the ISIS leader.

Conan has since returned to duty.
