DPS Nixes Free Licenses To CPR-Certified Texans

A new state law that provides free driver's licenses or handgun carry permits to Texans who are CPR certified is hitting a roadblock with the state police. The Texas Department of Public Safety is declining to put the fee waiver into effect. The DPS points out that the law says the state legislature has to set aside money to cover the cost of the waived fees, and lawmakers haven't done so. The bill's author, GOP state Representative Tom Oliverson of Cypress, says he'll try to enact a similar law in the next legislative session in 2021.
