Austin City Council Votes To Restrict Homeless Camping

The Austin City Council voted to put restrictions on homeless camping last night. The council ruled to ban public camping on sidewalks, along with camping near the ARCH and within fifteen feet of a business during operating hours. The restrictions come after public camping laws were relaxed back in June.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler is hopeful changes to the city's camping ordinance will work. He tells KVUE television the focus should be figuring out how to end homelessness in Austin. Adler is not sure if yesterday's changes means Governor Greg Abbott will back off on threats to get the state involved. The City Council banned camping on sidewalks. Abbott calls it a good first step.
