In a major victory for the often maligned inner city district, the San Antonio ISD's Young Women's Leadership Academy has muscled out perennial winner Northside Health Careers High School to be named the best overall high school in the San Antonio area by the group Children at Risk, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Children at Risk says it uses several meaures to determine the top performing high schools, including STAAR test scores, graduation rates, SAT performance, and performence on math and science tests.
Judson's Early College Academy ranked number two, with Health Careers finishing in third place this year.
In fact, seven of the top ten high schools in the region this year are charter or magnet schools, with North East ISD's perennially outstanding International School of the Americas among them. Other charter and magnet schools in the top ten include SAISD's Travis Early College High School, Comal ISD's Memorial Early College High School, and the San Antonio School of Science and Technolgy.
The three traditional general enrollment high schools on the list include North East's Johnson and Reagan High Schools, and Steele High School in the Schertz Cibolo Universal City ISD.
SAISD's Young Women's Leadership Academy was also named the top performing middle school in the San Antonio area by Children at Risk.
Wilderness Oak Elementary in the North East ISD was named the top elementary school in the region.
