Man Hit by Train West of Downtown

A man who is believed to be homeless is hospitalized in critical condition with massive head injuries after he was hit by a train early today, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Police say the man was standing on the train tracks on West Martin Street, just north of the Bexar County Jail, about 4 AM. The engineer of the train saw the man and sounding his horn, but he was unable to stop in time. Police say the train was only going about 20 miles an hour, following City speed limits set for freight trains.

Traffic Investigation Detectives are trying to determine why the man was on the railroad tracks.  The area, which is not far from the Haven for Hope, is a populated by many homeless people.
