Hawaii Governor Declares Emergency As Volcano Lava Flow Advances

Hundreds are being forced from their homes in Hawaii after a volcanic eruption.  Authorities ordered a mandatory evacuation for two communities on the eastern edge of the island as lava flooded the streets.  The eruption was preceded by hundreds of small earthquakes through the week.  Residents are left with no idea of when they can safely return to their homes.  The lack of activity doesn't mean the event is over, and high amounts of dangerous sulfur dioxide gas are still in the air.
