Grupo Mazz Co-Founder Lopez to be Released from Prison Today

The prison doors will swing open today for prominent Grammy Award winning south Texas Tejano star Joe Lopez, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Lopez, who is the co-founder of Grupo Mazz, has served 12 years of a 32 year sentence for raping his 13 year old cousin.

Jeremy Desel of the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles tells News Radio 1200 WOAI that Lopez won't be off their radar.

"He was recommended for parole by the parole board, and will be on parole until his projected release date which is in 2026," Desal said.

At which time Lopez will be 75 years old.

"The terms of his parole release are generally confidential, but I can tell you that he is under the classification of 'mandatory supervision,' which means he will be carefully looked after."

Lopez will also have to register as a sex offender, is barred from contacting the victim, and is prohibited from entering Harris County, where the victim lives.
