Little Boy's Shooting Will Figure into New Training for Deputies

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says a new training program that begins today at the new training academy on the south side will include lessons from last month's incident where a six year old boy was shot to death by a deputy, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Kameron Prescott was killed when a round fired by a deputy on the front porch of a mobile home in Schertz passed through the wall of the mobile home and hit him in the stomach.  Four deputies were attempting to subdue a female suspect who they believed was armed, although no weapon has been found.

"While we are very new in the investigation into this latest shooting, as things come to light and as we are learning things from them, we will be incorporating that into our training," Sheriff Javier Salazar said.

The deputies are on administrative leave while internal affairs and a district attorney's investigator examines the case.

"One of the basics of handgun use is making sure you are aware of your target and beyond, and that is something that is always covered in in service training," he said.

Salazar says it is important to learn from tragedies.

"As incidents happen in law enforcement, you are missing the boat if you are not learning from each and every one of the things you did good and the things you did bad, and incorporating that into the training."
