Girls Who Were Subject of AMBER Alert Found Safe, Suspect Arrested

Two girls who were the subjects of an urgent statewide AMBER Alert which was issued on New Year's Day have been found safe in Colorado, and the man accused of kidnapping them is under arrest, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks says police in Trinidad Colorado got a tip that the car listed in the AMBER Alert had been seen there.

"The deputy pulled behind that vehicle, the vehicle started driving erratically," Banks said.  "He waited for his backup to arrive, initiated a high risk traffic stop, and Terry Miles was taken into custody without incident."

Miles, 44, is held in Colorado on charges of kidnapping Lulu Bandera-Maget, 7, and Lily Griffith, 14.  They were found to be missing from their home when Round Rock Police, answering a welfare check call, found their mother, Tonya Bates, murdered.

"You can imagine how excited we are that Terry Miles was taken into custody in Colorado, and Lily and Lulu were found safe," Banks said.

Banks said Miles is a 'person of interest' in the murder of Tonya Bates.  Police have not said whether Miles and the family were acquainted.

"When we send out AMBER Alerts and bulletins, we do it for a reason, go get missing people back safe," Banks said.  "This is an example of the system working, and I want to say thank you very much to that tipster."
