San Antonio Council Approves 'Climate Action and Adaptation Plan'

The San Antonio City Council today approved a 'Climate Action and Adaptation Plan' to counter the effects of global warming, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

One of Ron Nirenberg's first priorities as mayor was to fill the gap left by the Trump Administration's exit from the Paris Climate Accord, and resolve to continue making steps to deal with climate change.

"This vote is a crucial step toward development the framework for a local action plan to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions," the Mayor said.  "The Climate Action and Adaptation Plan is important.  If we don't get this right, our children will inherit a city that's ill prepared for its climate and economic future."

Several reports have indicated that droughts could become longer and more frequent and extreme weather, like 2017's Hurricane Harvey, will become more common due to climate change.

The ordinance authorizes an Interagency Participation Agreement with CPS Energy and UTSA to come up with a regional plan along with San Antonio's Office of Sustainability.

CPS Energy has appropriated $500,000 to fund the plan.
