Southwest to Add Oakland, Ft. Lauderdale Non Stops

San Antonio International Airport is flying higher.

News Radio 1200 WOAI reports Southwest Airlines announced today that it is adding daily non stop service to Ft. Lauderdale and to Oakland.

The Oakland flight if of huge interest to the local tech industry, because it provides service to Silicon Valley.

"If you fly into the Oakland Airport you can get to downtown San Francisco a lot quicker than if you fly into San Francisco International," said Brett Piatt, CEO of San Antonio start up Jungle Disk.

Frontier earlier this summer announced non stop service to San Jose Airport.

The announcements are a major boost to SAT, which has been suffering under criticism for a lack of non stop flights, and a concern over the flight of as many as 20% of local passengers to airports in Austin and Houston who are seeking a wider variety of flights.

The flights will begin next July.
