San Antonio Recognized as 'Creative City of Gastronomy' by UNESCO

The United Nations has already recognized our Missions, now they are recognizing our tummies.

News Radio 1200 WOAI reports San Antonio has been designated a Creative City of Gastronomy by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the same people who two years ago designated the Spanish Colonial Missions as a World Heritage Site.

San Antonio becomes the fourth Creative City of Gastronomy, after Chicago, Tucson, and New Orleans.

It is part of the UNESCO 'Creative Cities' program, which aims to recognize and improve important human endeavors ranging from Crafts and Folk Art to Media to Film.

Several top local chefs will be on hand at the official announcement later today.

The recognition shows how San Antonio has emerged as a center for creative local and regional food since the establishment of the Culinary Institute of the Americas at the Pearl Complex ten years ago.

47 cities worldwide are being added to the UNESCO 'Creative Cities Network' in eight different categories this year.
