Dead Man Found in Ruins of Burned East Side Home

Firefighters have recovered the body of a man inside a home on the city's east side which was destroyed by fire early today, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

When crews arrived at the fire in the 600 block of Hammond, which is just south of I-10 near New Braunfels, flames had completely engulfed the home.

At one point, fire crews were forced to go 'defensive,' meaning they concentrated mainly on preventing the fire from spreading.

"We have a hoarding situation here," Fire Department spokesman Woody Woodward said.  "We have a house that is pretty jam packed with stuff, which made it more difficult for the firefighters."

Neighbors told firefighters that one elderly man lived alone in the house.  Crews searching the home have found a fire victim.  Officials say they are searching just in case anybody else was in the home, but they don't think so.

Arson investigators have been called in to investigate the cause of the fire.

The home is so badly damaged it will have to be demolished.
