Seguin Teen in Custody in Texas Tech Police Officer's Murder

A 19 year old Texas Tech freshman from Seguin is in custody this morning after he allegedly shot and killed a University Police Officer on the Lubbock campus Monday night, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

Texas Tech Police Chief Kyle Bonath says officers were asked to check on Hollis Daniels, and they found suspicious materials, believed to be drugs, in his dorm room.

"Our officers, the Texas Tech Police Department, did a welfare  check on a student," he said in a late night news conference.  "During the welfare check, they found some suspicious material.  The student was taken into custody and was brought back here (to the University Police station) per our standard operating procedures."

Bonath says the plan was to question the student and formally charge him with possession of the suspicious materials.

"Somehow during the debriefing, the suspect produced a weapon, has yet to determine the details of that, and mortally wounded one of our officers," the Chief said.

Daniels then ran out of the room, prompted a lock down order to be issued across the sprawling campus.

Bonath says Daniels was tackled by a campus officer in a parking lot near Jones AT&T Stadiuim and was taken into custody without further incident.

The University said early Tuesday the lockdown has been lifted and classes will resume as usual today.

It has not been determined how Daniels got the gun, whether he had it in his dorm room, or stole it while at the police station.
